Cruises in the Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are an archipelago of volcanic origin located in the Pacific Ocean, on both sides of the equatorial line. They are found quite far away from the nearest continental coast, at 906 km/563 mi away west of Ecuador, the country to which the islands belong.

For 20 million years or even longer, the Nazca and Cocos Plates have been diverging eastward from the Pacific Plate, leaving a mantle plume that created a platform called the Galapagos Rise. This is a volcanically active hotspot from where the Galapagos islands emerged and is also the reason why volcanic activity here does not stop.

The eastwards movement of the Nazca Plate causes a trend in the Galapagos Islands: The eastern islands are generally older, while western islands have emerged more recently (in geological timescale). This distribution, the large distances separating the islands, and the strong influence of the Humboldt, Cromwell, and Panama oceanic currents, create a very special place that has allowed species to evolve in singular ways and adapt to this remarkable biosphere.

All of these factors, along with the creation of the Galapagos National Park and Galapagos Marine Reserve, are the main reasons why these, dubbed the Enchanted Islands, are such an exceptional touristic destination: You can enjoy extraterrestrial-looking landscapes, fearless species with particular adaptations, a large variety of habitats, and exciting seasonal events year-round. It is truly a place where travellers will discover life-changing experiences!
